“Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness”. ~Maya Angelou, Gather Together in My Name

What part does music play in your life?Is it your refuge?Do you celebrate with music?Music plays a part in most people’s lives, and for most it enriches and nourishes our existence in many ways.

“Music is what feelings sound like”. ~Author Unknown

I love this quote, because it’s difficult to describe what music does for me. Music takes me to a place I can’t get to any other way.

“I have my own particular sorrows, loves, delights; and you have yours. But sorrow, gladness, yearning, hope, love, belong to all of us, in all times and in all places. Music is the only means whereby we feel these emotions in their universality”. ~H.A. Overstreet

We come together in music. Have you ever noticed how you feel in a crowd when you’re listening to live music? You feel camaraderie.  You feel connected. You get a sense of knowing one another even though you are strangers. Through music, you experience emotions together.

“When words leave off, music begins”. ~Heinrich Heine

Sometimes words are not enough. Music fills in those spaces. Music is background and foreground. Music is essential in our lives. It is creative energy that comes from a place deep inside us. The rhythm beneath the music is elemental and reminds us of our roots. It connects us to our internal rhythm and to one another.

There have been times in my life when I have strayed too far away from my music. When I realize it, and I play my old favorites, I become filled again with the energy and emotion that the music brings me, and I remember what I’d missed. Music is a blessing in my life. What is your life’s music?
